I was at Starbucks the other week and was standing by the counter waiting for my drink. I noticed that they had at least half a dozen digital kitchen timers attached by magnet to the side of the espresso machine and some clipped onto employee aprons.
I asked one of the employees what they were for, and they said that they were for all different sorts of things. A couple were for the brewed coffees when they were done, there was another timer specifically for the bananas when they needed to be tossed, and many others.
The side of that espresso machine littered with kitchen timers got me to thinking, “what if I did the same thing as Starbucks? What if I went out and bought a crap load of kitchen timers and used them for timing all of the different things going on throughout the day?” Starbucks has to know a few things about efficiency.
I did a little internet search and found out that Starbucks mostly uses the CDN TM8 Digital Timer. Its extremely simple and easy to use. It has a strong magnet, a stand, and nice little clip on the back, and we all know how much we love clips here at Binderclipped. The case for these certain digital timers are their ease of use. They are simple, intuitive, and inexpensive.
Often times to be efficient simply means to do things in less time. Having a timer clipped onto your belt, telling you that you have ten minutes to wash the dishes and do a load of laundry is a great way to keep you on task, and in turn, be more efficient with your time. I time my showers in order to keep me from taking those super long and lazy showers. It’s become a game for me, how fast can I take a complete shower? (4 minutes for those who are wondering) Every time I jump into the shower, its a new opportunity to break my record or to find a faster and cleaner way to shower. The timer gives me a base number to improve on.
Having one timer is fine, but you won’t want to go to the kitchen and dig it out of the drawer when you want to time your shower. So I would recommend getting a few of the timers and putting them around the house. Ease of access helps here. I have two of these timers, and plan on buying a couple more.
